At NextGenExcavating, we build retaining walls and boulder walls that do more than hold back soil. They protect your yard, manage slopes, control erosion, and give your property a clean, finished look. If you have a steep grade, a washed-out hillside, or a yard that is hard to use, we can build a wall system that makes the space safer, stronger, and more useful.

Retaining walls are one of the best ways to solve drainage and elevation problems around homes, driveways, outbuildings, and rural properties. In our South Rochester service area, we see many properties with sloped ground, runoff issues, and erosion after heavy rain or spring thaw. A properly built wall helps stabilize the area and protects nearby structures, landscaping, and usable yard space.

What retaining walls and boulder walls do

These structures are designed to hold back soil and reshape uneven ground. That makes them a smart choice for both function and appearance. Depending on your property, a wall can help:

Stop erosion on hillsides and embankments
Manage steep grades and create flatter, more usable areas
Protect driveways, garages, sheds, patios, and foundations from soil movement
Improve drainage and direct water away from problem spots
Create separation between lawn, landscape beds, and hardscaped areas
Add a natural, attractive feature that fits the look of the land

Some customers need a wall because the slope is failing or washing out. Others want to reclaim part of the yard, support a driveway edge, or build around a new excavation project. We can also combine wall work with grading, excavation, and land clearing when the site needs a full solution.

Retaining wall options

We offer retaining wall and boulder wall installation based on the grade, soil conditions, drainage needs, and appearance you want. Every property is different, so we do not take a one-size-fits-all approach.

Boulder walls

Boulder walls are a popular option for Minnesota properties because they are durable, natural-looking, and well suited for larger slopes and rural settings. Large stones can create a strong wall with a rugged appearance that blends in well with the landscape. Boulder walls are often a good fit for erosion control, shoreline-style grading, slope stabilization, and larger retaining areas where strength and a natural finish matter most.

Segmental retaining walls

In some cases, a block retaining wall may be the right choice for a cleaner, more uniform look. These walls can work well around homes, patios, walkways, and landscaped areas where a more finished appearance is preferred. They are often used for garden walls, raised areas, seating walls, and smaller engineered retaining systems.

Small retaining walls and large structural walls

We handle both decorative and functional wall projects. Some walls are built mainly to shape landscaping and define outdoor spaces. Others are designed to support major grade changes and protect important parts of the property. We look at the wall height, slope load, drainage, and surrounding conditions to recommend the right solution.

Our process

We believe good wall work starts with proper site prep and honest advice. A retaining wall is only as good as the base, drainage, and installation behind it. We focus on the details that make the wall last.

Site review: We look at the slope, soil, runoff patterns, access, and nearby structures. We also talk with you about the problem you want to solve and the look you want to achieve.
Planning and layout: We determine the wall location, height, alignment, and how the finished grade should flow with the rest of the property.
Excavation and base prep: We excavate as needed and prepare a stable foundation. Proper base work is critical for long-term performance.
Drainage considerations: We build with water management in mind. Drainage behind and around the wall is one of the most important parts of preventing pressure buildup and failure.
Wall installation: We place boulders or wall materials carefully for strength, stability, and appearance.
Backfill and finish grading: After the wall is in place, we backfill properly and grade the surrounding area to support drainage and a clean final result.

When needed, we can also tie the project into broader excavation or land-shaping work so the whole area functions the way it should.

Why drainage matters

Many retaining wall problems start with poor drainage. Water builds up behind the wall, pressure increases, and the wall begins to lean, shift, or fail. That is why we pay close attention to grading and drainage from the start. Our goal is to help water move where it should, not collect where it causes damage.

If your yard has standing water, washouts, soggy areas, or runoff heading toward a structure, we can often address those issues as part of the project. A well-built retaining wall should not just look good on day one. It should perform through heavy rain, snowmelt, and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles common in Minnesota.

Where retaining walls are commonly used

Retaining walls and boulder walls can be installed in many areas around a property, including:

Backyards with steep slopes
Driveway edges and approaches
Around garages, sheds, and outbuildings
Garden and landscape beds
Patio and outdoor living areas
Property lines with elevation changes
Embankments that are eroding or hard to maintain

If you are not sure whether a retaining wall is the best fix, we can take a look and give you practical guidance based on the site conditions and your budget.

Benefits of professional wall installation

Hiring an experienced excavation contractor for retaining wall work helps protect your investment. These projects involve more than stacking stone or block. They require an understanding of soil, drainage, slope pressure, equipment access, grading, and long-term stability.

When we build your retaining wall or boulder wall, we focus on:

Stable construction that is built for the site conditions
A layout that improves how the property looks and functions
Drainage solutions that help prevent future issues
Clean grading and smooth transitions around the wall
Clear communication from start to finish

As an excavation company, we bring the equipment and sitework knowledge needed to handle the groundwork correctly. That matters on sloped properties, problem areas, and projects where wall installation ties into broader excavation or land clearing work.
